Senior artists at Djilpin Arts have been sharing culture for decades, ensuring knowledge is being passed on for future generations. As time passes, mobility, steady hand or vision issues increase, with the artist’s ability to document and transfer stories becoming somewhat reduced. Djilpin is supporting our artists to stay connected and maintain income through our Classic Beswick Series.

About Russell Ashley
Russell is a talented artist who learned his craft through the traditional method of patiently watching, absorbing, and asking questions. Russell's brother, Jahdi Ashley was a big teaching influence using this technique. This brother also apprenticed Russell by encouraging him to paint small sections of his work at a time.
Russell initially started with small paintings of his own, and as confidence and his skill grew started to increase canvas sizes. Now Russell is a multi talented artist who carves in multiple timbers, as well as paints on canvas, bark and other mediums.

Djilpin River Dreaming
This piece depicts three fish found at Djilpin River, the artist’s country: two barramundi and a catfish. Lily root and pads are also visible.

Spear & Razor Blade
This painting tells the important Wagilak tribe story of collecting and shaping Laar’da. These are stones shaped into sharp spear tips and razor blades; important tools for hunting and boys initiation.
