David Blanasi
Yawkyawk River #1 Gundidi Country
1996
Acrylic on canvas
131.5cm x 93cm
This is big water, running. The spring on the top left-hand
side is running from a big hill to the large water hole on its
way to the sea. It's the place David Blanasi calls Gundidi, his
home country. At the top all the animals drink at this stream,
the jabiru emu, brolga, all animals. They don't drink at the
bottom, there is too much biting in the water from the crocodile
(kolomomo). This waterhole is the biggest waterhole with a stream
that goes off at the bottom left hand side of the painting to
Maningrida. The stream at the bottom left stops short and dries
up. Here the big fish swim both ways towards the sea and towards
the land. All the trees around the outside are very big trees.
On the very bottom of the painting, in the middle is the sand
and grass, like lawn on both sides of the sand. The large rarrk
areas are the hills where the stream flows through. This is big
didgeridu country, getting close to Maningrida. David Blanasi
had not been to this country for a long time. It is how he remembered
it as a little boy.
