Djoli Laiwanga OAM
Nawaran - Oenpelli Olive Python
1997
Acrylic on canvas
113cm x 83cm

The olive python (nawaran) lives in the hill country. There are many around Oenpelli in Arnhem Land. It comes out at night and will frighten you if you stand on it. It has a huge body and can swallow a kangaroo or climb trees to eat flying foxes. It is dangerous and can swallow kids whole if they get in the way. In this picture it is a small hungry one. Sometimes it is so big it will take up the whole road. You can eat them and they have a lot of juicy blood. The rarrk and the dots (dil dil) around the edge are decoration.
