Jimmy Hood
Bush Potato -Yam
1997
Acrylic on Canvas
108cm x 77cm
Jimmy's painting uses the rarrk, the old style cross-hatching.
This painting is of bush tucker - botchu - which is a little
bit like a bush yam. It grows just underneath the surface of
the ground, unlike the bush yam which is deeper under ground.
You can find it anywhere in Arnhem Land, anytime of the year.
You cook it in the coals, or roast it, and then peel off the
skin and eat the inside of it. Botchu is Dhuwa food and this
is a Dhuwa painting.
Arnhem Land people share this bush tucker with kangaroos and
wallabies. Sometimes kangaroo's smell this bush tucker and then
dig it up with their claws and eat it. The main types are the
rock wallaby, rock kangaroo and grass wallaby.
