Kunlabbarl #1 - Billabong Tucker
1997
Acrylic on canvas
132.5cm x 78.5cm
On the top (kaddum) there is the freshwater crab (kambuk)
and the short-neck turtle (ngad). On the bottom (kanjdji) is
the freshwater crayfish (yad) and the long-neck turtle (komdawh).
Round about the middle are two freshwater leaches (baladj). There
are two filesnakes (jaigung) and at the top in a log is a black
python snake, a different kind called (bolokko). On both sides
of the turtles are their eggs. The water lilies with the long
stems are ready to eat. Pull them out, cook on the ashes or eat
them raw, or grind up the seed to make damper. The smaller plants
are the lily roots/nuts (budbarrk), they are in the mud, eat
them raw and crunchy or cooked, when they go yellow. Beside the
crabs both top and bottom are rocks. The nail fish (baridjarr)
swim upwards when the first rain comes and it burns their eyes.
They swim upward with their whiskers sticking up looking for
air. Painting is both Yirritja and Dhuwa to keep the balance
of the system.
