Dancing Mimi Spirits & their Food
1996
Acrylic on canvas
66.5cm x 56cm
These mimi spirits are happy and dancing because they have
gathered a lot of food. In the picture on top (kaddum), three
butterflies (merli-merli), two yams (karrbarda) and the rainbow
serpent (bolung). On the right is father mimi (ngabbard) and
child mimi (wurdyaw) in the middle. The father carries a dilly
bag (djerrh) to store tools such as a stone axe or knives. The
mother has a dilly bag (djerrh) around her neck to carry bush
tucker. They are both wearing a loincloth (kunkod). The mother
mimi has a baby bark (kunkod) to carry the baby mimi. These mimis
are all painted up for dancing (ka-borrkke).
